How Do I Begin Reading the Bible?
A gentle, practical guide for anyone who wants to start reading the Bible for the first time.
Primary Scripture
Psalm 119:105
The Psalmist calls God's Word 'a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.' Reading the Bible is about walking with God, not achieving a checklist.
The Bible is a library — 66 books written over centuries by many authors, all pointing to Jesus Christ. That can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't need to be.
Where to Start
Start with the Gospel of John in the New Testament. It was written to help people believe in Jesus (John 20:31). After John, read Mark (short and vivid), then Genesis and the Psalms.
How to Read
- Pray briefly: 'Lord, please help me to see and understand.'
- Read slowly. Underline or note anything about Jesus, God, or yourself.
- Ask three questions: What does it say? What does it mean? What does it mean for me?
What this does not mean
Reading the Bible is not a magical formula. It is listening to God, and it is meant to lead to trust in Christ, not merely religious knowledge.
Application
Start with the Gospel of John. Read one short passage a day, ask God to help you understand, and note what you learn about Jesus.
Reflection questions
- What has held me back from opening the Bible?
- Who is one person I can read with, to encourage each other?
