What Is Eternal Life? A Biblical Answer
Eternal life is God's gift in Jesus Christ — not merely endless time, but a real relationship with God that begins now and continues forever.

Jesus prayed these words on the night before His crucifixion (John 17). Speaking to the Father, He defined eternal life not as a length of days but as knowing God through the One He sent — Jesus Christ Himself.
Many people think of eternal life as an unending afterlife — heaven as a reward for being good enough. The Bible tells a deeper, more beautiful story.
On the night before He was crucified, Jesus prayed these remarkable words to the Father: “And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3). Eternal life, according to Jesus, is a Person. It is knowing God.
Why We Need Eternal Life
Scripture is honest about our condition. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23) — not merely biological death but spiritual separation from the God who is life. Left to ourselves, we cannot bridge that separation.
How Eternal Life Comes to Us
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Eternal life is a gift. Christ gave Himself as a ransom for all (1 Timothy 2:6), and God offers forgiveness and life to everyone who trusts Jesus.
How You Can Know You Have It
“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). Assurance is a normal part of the Christian life — grounded not in our feelings but in God's promise and Christ's finished work.
What this does not mean
Eternal life does not mean 'life goes on forever no matter what'. Scripture teaches that everyone will exist forever, but not everyone will share in the life of God. Eternal life is a specific gift — reconciled relationship with the living God — given to those who trust Jesus Christ.
Application
If eternal life is knowing God, then it starts today. Take one honest step: ask God to help you understand who Jesus is, and read the Gospel of John slowly, one chapter at a time.
