Why Did Jesus Die?
Jesus died as a substitute for sinners, bearing God's just judgment so we could be forgiven.
Primary Scripture
Isaiah 53:5
Seven centuries before the cross, Isaiah foretold a Servant who would be 'pierced for our transgressions.' The New Testament testifies that this is Jesus.
The cross is the centre of the Christian faith. Every other truth flows from and back to it.
Because Sin Is Real
Sin is not a minor problem. It separates us from God and deserves judgment. But God does not want us to perish.
Because Love Is Real
'But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us' (Romans 5:8). At the cross, God's holiness and God's love meet.
What this does not mean
Jesus did not die because His mission failed or because God is cruel. He willingly laid down His life (John 10:18) as an act of love and justice combined.
Application
The cross is not a symbol of defeat but of love that costs. Meditate on Romans 5:6–8 this week and ask, 'How does this shape how I love others?'
